Keyword Research

What keywords do you think your customers would type in to search for your products or services? A keyword can be one word (e.g. Plumber), but multiple keywords or keyword phrases are usually preferred, because they are more specific and more likely to be what your customers are looking for. Write down as many as you can think of. Brainstorm with your team. Think of alternative words. So try your best to select the keyword phrases that are the most relevant to you business but that are not vague nor competitive. Web copy refers to all the words or text on your website. Because content is king in the world of search engines, your keyword phrases need to be placed strategically on your webpage to convince Google that your content is highly relevant to those keywords. The more prominent they are, the better. (Keep in mind that as important as search engines are, customers come first, so make sure your copy also reads well.)
Here's how you can increase each keyword prominence:
Place your keywords in headings, preferably at the beginning of the heading;
Include keywords towards the top of the page;
Bold or italicize keywords where appropriate;
Instead of having a link to another page, reword it to include your keywords, e.g. Read more about our 'OUR TOP RATED PLUMBING Services.
An important tip is to also include these keywords in your HTML title tag. Use your content management system to make these changes yourself, or perhaps ask your web developer to do it if you're unsure how.

I have been working with a lot of Entrepreneurs over the last 6 years as a consultant, a business leader, and one myself.  There are two types of Entrepreneurs and I have definitions for them:

1.    Successful Entrepreneur
2.    Unsuccessful Entrepreneur
3.    New Entrepreneur

Not very catchy definitions are they? Let me define them based on their characteristics because the “New Entrepreneur” out there could save them self a lot of headache if they look for behavior that generally leads them to failure.

Sucessful Entrepreneurs

These guys are easy. They know the game. They understand why you build a business. They do it over and over again because they love the challenge. They are not in it for their egos, the idea, or the need to have President on their business card. They do it because they can’t do anything else, but build things and then sell it off.  They get it started, then hand it off to people to run it.

Unsuccessful Entrepreneurs

Things just don't work out for the Unsuccessful Entrepreneur.  More often than not, they keep on trying, and get it a little more right next time.  Eventually, some become successful.  Often, they give up and return to the safety net of a 40 hour per week job.  Their idea, product, or service just does not solve anyone’s problem, but their own.

New Entrepreneurs

I have a lot of respect for people that venture out into their own or try to turn an idea into action.  These are people that generally don’t fit into the corporate structure, are generally liberal minded (not to confuse the Rush Limbaugh listeners of the world, liberal minded means finding new ways of doing things from how it is always done.  Or, it simply means outside the box thinking).  Having the audacity to question how things are being done and suggest there is a better way to do it.

So the new Entrepreneur has this great idea!  Then, they get excited because they could make a lot of money doing it!  “I am going to be rich!”  So, they embark on the emotional high of becoming an Entrepreneur.  They become infatuated with their idea.  It is the best idea and the only idea worth investing.  Most need money to fund their idea, yet they don’t want to give anything up to get other people’s money.  Their valuation of the business is way over inflated and they have no sales.  Ego and control start to get in the way.

I have been involved in several start-up ventures and this is a common pattern that occurs.  As I sit at the Venture Club of Indiana and listen to new ideas being pitched around the table, the pattern is there.  The “New Entrepreneur” is excited about their great idea, yet they cannot really articulate how to make money with it.  Their assumptions about their market are not well defined and they do not really understand what it takes to get a business going.  They don’t understand why no one will invest in their business.  They are passionate about the idea and their ego loves the fact that they can now put President on their business card.

So what is important for new Entrepreneurs?  It is all about sales.

When I was President of a successful company, one of the guests to our meeting made an important point.  He said, everyone says you need and accountant and a lawyer to get a business started.  So, everyone goes out and gets and accountant and a lawyer to make you feel good about your idea.  This is backwards.  He points out that you need customers first to determine if the idea has merit, then go out and hire an accountant and a lawyer. Is what you are doing in demand and are people willing to pay for it?

In other words, it is about sales and marketing.  As a New Entrepreneur is weighing the idea, the emphasis needs to be on sales and marketing.  Get the idea, product, or service out there and see if someone will pay you for it.  Do you need an infrastructure to support it?  Yes.  Do you need to be able to deliver it?  Yes.  But figure out what kind of expectations you can put out there and manage.  As another successful Entrepreneur told me, don’t be afraid of success.  You can always find money, if you have a book of business to show an investor.  And, you can always find ways to deliver.

In our web consulting, we see the New Entrepreneur all the time.  Some people are looking for the “Mirror”.  “Come in and tell me that I am great, my idea is great, and that you can sell it the way I want it to be sold, even though I have had mediocre success to date.”  In our case, the web plays an important part for most customers trying to sell products or services.  They focus on their logo and their image, their name. Unsuccessful entrepreneurs gladly feed into their egos and leave results starving at the table.

The reality is New Entrepreneurs need to focus on results.  In business, results equal sales and profits.  Logos, names, and images can have value – only if people buy because of the name, logo and image.

Get centered Answering the questions of your buyers:

1.    What is it?
2.    What is the value?
3.    How do I get it?
4.    Has anyone else used it?
a.    What do they say?
b.    If not?  What is the edge I get with it?
5.    Yes, I want one!

With limited resources and limited time, investment needs to be on finding the market, bringing them to you, engaging the market, and closing some deals or selling product. The question to always ask:

Is what I am doing or spending money going to help me generate more sales?

Case in point, people always feel like they need to reinvent something that has been tested to work.  (Ok…I respect out of the box thinking, but dollars can be wasted on IT projects that bring very little value in the end). E-Commerce is an area that people feel the need to “customize”.  We had a client that need to change e-Commerce systems because the one they were using did not support standard marketing practices for e-Commerce sites.  Yet, they would not do it because the one they were using had a feature that really brought no value to the buyer or their business.  Again, was what they were doing going to help them generate more sales?  The answer was no, yet they chose to spend $20,000 when $3,500 would have done the job for the next five years.

So, New Entrepreneurs, here are some things to keep in mind:

1.    No one cares about “the idea.”  They care about what the idea will do for them.
2.    Investors don’t care about “the idea.”  They care if their investment in the idea will make them money.
3.    Investors don’t invest in “the idea”, they invest in the people behind the idea.  If you do not demonstrate your ability to execute, you will not get investment.
4.    Being President of nothing with no sales has no value.
5.    It’s about marketing and sales, particularly for start-ups.
a.    Always ask, is what I am doing going to help me sell more?
b.    Is what I am spending my money on going to help me sell more?
c.    Can I apply metrics to what I am doing?
6.    It’s about execution.

As it relates to the web marketing, the same rules apply.  Here is the list to keep in mind:

1.    The website visitor does not care about you, they care about what you can do for them.  They want to know:
a.    What is it?
b.    What is the value?
c.    How do I get it?
2.    Before you spend money on an expensive website, can you answer these questions:
a.    How big is the market?
b.    What words do people use to search your product?
c.    How much to advertise?
d.    Who are your competitors?
e.    What are they doing?
f.    What are they not doing?
g.    Who are the top ranked sites?
3.    Have you budgeted for web marketing?
a.    Monthly?
4.    You are a new business, people don’t know you.  And until you spend millions on drilling your brand into the American psyche, they aren't going to know your brand from a hole in the ground.  Use what you do, or what your customers call your product as your name.  This strategy worked fine in the past and still works fine today.  Evidence: International Business Machines, Advanced Micro Devices, American Telephone and Telegraph, General Motors, General Electric, National Cash Register, American Airlines and Budget Rent-a-Car.  Not an obscure latin name with an interesting meaning only to you.

There is really nothing sexy about Internet marketing. Don't underestimate what the extremely powerful tool internet marketing and social media can do for your business  It too is about execution.  It is about results.  It is not about corporate ego.  It is about what your product or service does for the buyer and the investor and it's about getting it out there to the world.

I was looking around at some websites to see what things I liked and disliked about them. There is no doubt that there are things that attract people and there are things that totally turn people off. I have made a list of 13 tips that can help make a website more successful. Most of them are simple but quite effective at making a site more user friendly.  

I Liked And Disliked

1. Make A Website simple – With all of the bells and whistles available, too many people are trying to see how impressive they can make their websites. They may be attractive but unless goal is to win a contest for best site, impressing people with glitter will not make sales.

2. Make sure the site loads quickly – You do not have long to grab customer's attention. Make sure that you at least get a fair shot at grabbing his attention. If the site takes too long to load, you will lose a lot of potential customers without even giving your site a chance.

3. Don't have too many items on one page – You do not want to confuse visitors. You want to make sure that they understand the purpose of the site. Too many items on one page can make this difficult for some. Don't take the chance. Make all of your pages simple.

4. Make sure every page lings to home page – It is much easier for visitors to navigate if all pages link back to the home page. You will not lose as many potential customers if you make site easier to navigate.

5. Get your own domain name – Free servers are great for some things but trying to gain credibility in a business is not one of them. It is well worth the price to get your own domain.

6. Make sure the hosting service offers full support – You want your service to have CGI access and offer secure ordering. This is a place that you don't want to go for cheap. Make sure your service offers the things you need before you choose and save a lot of headaches down the road.

7. Offer as many options for ordering as possible – The more options you provide for ordering, the fewer customers you will lose. You should have a secure order form on your site. Offering the options to order by phone, fax and by regular mail can also increase the number who will order.

8. Make sure you accept credit cards – If you don't accept credit cards, you are making a huge mistake. The biggest percent of customers will pay this way if the option is available. Don't take the chance that they will choose another method if credit cards are not a possibility.

9. Offer free information on the site – You will want to offer some type of free material on your site. Free material such as courses are a very good way to build yourself as an expert in the eyes of your visitor. Free ebooks are another good thing to offer. Make sure these freebies are good solid information that can help your visitors.

10. Get your visitor's email address – You can accomplish this in quite a few different ways. Giving away the courses or ebooks is one great way. You can publish a newsletter or ezine that your visitors can sign up for on your site.

11. Make sure to build your site with purpose in mind – If you are trying to sell a product on your site, then sell that product. If you are just trying to get addresses and make the sale later, then make that your purpose when building your site.

12. Encourage feedback – Make your visitor feel like his opinion is important. Offer him the chance to provide you with feedback. Don't be too proud to make changes if you start hearing some of the same things from your visitors.

13. Remember that you are building this site for your customers – This is not a site to fulfill some fantasy of yours. Remember the purpose of your site. Keep your customers wants and needs in your mind as you design it.

Your website is one of those things that will determine if you are a marketing success. Make sure that you make a website user friendly. 1. You will get rich quick. Marketing on the internet takes a lot of work. This is not a get rich quick scheme. It takes much time learning and failing before you will succeed. Your success is entirely up to you. You will reap what you sow. 

2. You won't make any money. Again you will reap what you sow. Your key to success is through consistency and persistency. If you are willing to learn and accept failures from time to time, learn from your mistakes and apply that knowledge – the money will come. Don't give up. There are lots of people who truly do make money this way.

3. Anyone can do this. If you tell your self there is nothing to this, you will set yourself up for guaranteed failure. A profession such as this takes a lot of discipline and most of all the willingness to learn. It takes a lot of hard work and an open mind. You have to be willing to embrace new ideas as they come and take this seriously.

4. Not everyone can do this. This is also not true. As long as you free your mind to scepticism such as these, you have taken your first step. While this profession takes time to figure out, it is not hard to figure out. Remember the only person stopping you is you! 

5. It is too hard. Look within your self. There is an online business in you. What do you know? What do you like? What do you need that has not been created yet? Answers to these questions and questions like them are the beginnings of you having the ability to set yourself apart from the crowd.

6. It will be easy. It will get easier, but you will have to do loads of studying. Spend many hours brainstorming. You will spend many hours reading, writing, and learning what works and what doesn't. It will get tedious and hard to stick to. Persevere, your reward is coming.

7. It will only require 2-3 hours a day. At some point you will be able to automate most of your efforts. In the beginning, long hours are not unheard of. I have spent many 18 hour days in front of my computer.

I have been working with a lot of Entrepreneur’s over the last 6 years as a consultant, a business leader, and one myself.  I have tried to read a Mind Of an Entrepreneur. There are three types of Entrepreneurs and I have definitions for them:

1. Successful Entrepreneur
2. Unsuccessful Entrepreneur
3. New Entrepreneur

Not very catchy definitions are they?  Let me define them based on their characteristics because the “New Entrepreneur” out there could save them self a lot of headache if they look for behavior that generally leads them to failure.

Successful Entrepreneurs

These guys are easy.  They know the game.  They understand why you build a business.  They do it over and over again because they love the challenge.  They are not in it for their egos, the idea, or the need to have a President on their business card.  They do it because they can’t do anything else, but builds things and then sell it off.  They get it started, then hand it off to people to run it.

Unsuccessful Entrepreneurs

Things just don't work out for the Unsuccessful Entrepreneur.  More often than not, they keep on trying, and get it a little more right next time.  Eventually, some become successful.  Often, they give up and return to the safety net of a 40 hour per week job.  Their idea, product, or service just does not solve anyone’s problem, but their own.

New Entrepreneurs

I have a lot of respect for people that venture out into their own or try to turn an idea into action.  These are people that generally don’t fit into the corporate structure, are generally liberal minded (not to confuse the Rush Limbaugh listeners of the world, liberal minded means finding new ways of doing things from how it is always done.  Or, it simply means outside the box thinking).  Having the audacity to question how things are being done and suggest there is a better way to do it.

So the new Entrepreneur has this great idea!  Then, they get excited because they could make a lot of money doing it!  “I am going to be rich!”  So, they embark on the emotional high of becoming an Entrepreneur.  They become infatuated with their idea.  It is the best idea and the only idea worth investing.  Most need money to fund their idea, yet they don’t want to give anything up to get other people’s money.  Their valuation of the business is way over inflated and they have no sales.

Ego and control start to get in the way.

I have been involved in several start-up ventures and this is a common pattern that occurs.  As I sit and listen to new ideas being pitched around the table, the pattern is there.  The “New Entrepreneur” is excited about their great idea, yet they cannot really articulate how making money with it.  Their assumptions about their market are not well defined and they do not really understand what it takes to get a business going.  They don’t understand why no one will invest in their business.  They are passionate about the idea and their ego loves the fact that they can now put the President on their business card.

So what is important for new Entrepreneurs?  It is all about sales.

When I was President of the Indiana Entrepreneur’s Alliance, one of the guests to our meeting made an important point.  He said, everyone says you need an accountant and a lawyer to get a business started.  So, everyone goes out and gets and accountant and a lawyer make you feel good about your idea.  This is backwards.  He points out that you need customers first to determine if the idea has merit, then go out and hire an accountant and a lawyer. Is what you are doing in demand and are people willing to pay for it?

In other words, it is about sales and marketing.  As a New Entrepreneur is weighing the idea, the emphasis needs to be on sales and marketing.  Get the idea, product, or service out there and see if someone will pay you for it.  Do you need an infrastructure to support it?  Yes.  Do you need to be able to deliver it?  Yes.  But figure out what kind of expectations you can put out there and manage.  As another successful Entrepreneur told me, don’t be afraid of success.  You can always find money, if you have a book of business to show an investor.  And, you can always find ways to deliver.

In our web consulting, we see the New Entrepreneur all the time.  Some people are looking for the “Mirror”.  “Come in and tell me that I am great, my idea is great, and that you can sell it the way I want it to be sold, even though I have had mediocre success to date.”  In our case, the web plays an important part for most customers trying to sell products or services.  They focus on their logo and their image, their name. Unsuccessful entrepreneurs gladly feed into their egos and leave results starving at the table.

The reality is New Entrepreneurs need to focus on results.  In business, results equal sales and profits.  Logos, names, and images can have value – only if people buy because of the name, logo and image.

Get centered Answering the questions of your buyers:
1. What is it?
2. What is the value?
3. How do I get it?
4. Has anyone else used it?
a. What do they say?
b. If not?  What is the edge I get with it?
5. Yes, I want one!

With limited resources and limited time, investment needs to be on finding the market, bringing them to you, engaging the market, and closing some deals or selling product. The question to always ask:

Is what I am doing or spending money going to help me generate more sales?

Case in point, people always feel like they need to reinvent something that has been tested to work.  (OkI respect out of the box thinking, but dollars can be wasted on IT projects that bring very little value in the end). E-Commerce is an area that people feel the need to “customize”.  We had a client that need to change e-Commerce systems because the one they were using did not support standard marketing practices for e-Commerce sites.  Yet, they would not do it because the one they were using had a feature that really brought no value to the buyer or their business.  Again, was what they were doing going to help them generate more sales?  The answer was no, yet they chose to spend $20,000 when $3,500 would have done the job for the next five years.

So, New Entrepreneurs, here are some things to keep in mind:

1. No one cares about “the idea.”  They care about what the idea will do for them.
2. Investors don’t care about “the idea.”  They care if their investment in the idea will make them money.
3. Investors don’t invest in “the idea”, they invest in the people behind the idea.  If you do not demonstrate your ability to execute, you will not get investment.
4. Being President of nothing with no sales has no value.
5. It’s about marketing and sales, particularly for start-ups.
a. Always ask, is what I am doing going to help me sell more?
b. Is what I am spending my money on going to help me sell more?
c. Can I apply metrics to what I am doing?
6. It’s about execution.

As it relates to the web marketing, the same rules apply.  Here is the list to keep in mind:

1. The website visitor does not care about you, they care about what you can do for them.  They want to know:
a. What is it?
b. What is the value?
c. How do I get it?
2. Before you spend money on an expensive website, can you answer these questions:
a. How big is the market?
b. What words do people use to search your product?
c. How much to advertise?
d. Who are your competitors?
e. What are they doing?
f. What are they not doing?
g. Who are the top ranked sites?
3. Have you budgeted for web marketing?
a. Monthly?
4. You are a new business, people don’t know you.  And until you spend millions on drilling your brand into the American psyche, they aren't going to know your brand from a hole in the ground.  Use what you do, or what your customers call your product as your name.  This strategy worked fine in the past and still works fine today. 

Evidence: International Business Machines, Advanced Micro Devices, American Telephone and Telegraph, General Motors, General Electric, National Cash Register, American Airlines and Budget Rent-a-Car.  Not an obscure latin name with an interesting meaning only to you.

There is really nothing sexy about Internet marketing.  It too is about execution.  It is about results.  It is not about corporate ego.  It is about what your product or service does for the buyer and the investor. 6. Link analysis is used by important search engines in ranking algorithms. So, it is crucial to build solid links. Ensure that the links are relevant to your web content.  Think quality not quantity. The secret is in approaching sites that are non-competitive and are ranked high by search engines.
 
7. Avoid spamming. It can get you banned. Fight the battle for supremacy by ethical means. Just ensure that your content is relevant and interesting, layout simple, and titles attractive and teasing.

9. Avoid automated programs for submission of pages. Submit manually and pay attention to any problems reported.

You may be a bit surprised to learn that monetization is the last of the 4 steps. Many business owners position monetization as their first goal.  Everything they do from conception of the business is geared towards making money.  After all, that is the point of owning your own web business, right?
 
When I first learned of the four step approach to making successful Internet businesses, I was a bit skeptical.  I have never heard of such a risky business idea- think of making money as the last goal.  That sounded absurd to me! In all of my small business education the emphasis was on profit charts and balance sheets and projected annual returns.  Being online does change some things.  One of those things is how you start and run a long term and profitable business.
 
Following the process of starting a web business often involved very little capital.  The risk is typically much lower and the return on investment arrives in a shorter time span.  Because of this you have a unique advantage to allow the natural progression of your site visitors come into play.
 
Let’s back up a bit and review.  People search for information, not products, online.  They are not looking to spend money.  They type in their search query at the search engines.  Your site should be on the first page.  You should know how to provide a killer title and description that makes the potential visitor want to click on your site.
 
Once they are on your site, their objective has not changed.  They still want information.  So give it to them.  As you provide valuable content that satisfies your visitors, you should be developing trust and positioning yourself as the expert.  Make recommendations to your products or services. This is the natural progression of an online visitor.  They want information, they find you, they receive answers from you, they develop trust in you and think of you as an expert.  It is only when those criteria have been met that you gain customers.
 
Let me repeat that last line because it is the most important line in the entire 4 part series: it is only when the first three steps have been met that you earn income. Web Success Secret #3) Pre-selling is far more effective than selling.

The first two parts of this series were geared towards both the search engines and your visitors.  This article focuses directly on your visitor- more specifically your relationship with your visitor.  You must gently and effectively pre-sell your visitor on your goods or services.
 
Anyone can sell a product or service online.  All it takes is a link to a payment processor such as Paypal.  The difference between successful online business owners and those wishing to make a buck is in their ‘voice’.  A website has a voice.  The look and feel of your website gives your visitor an impression.  When your visitor reads your words they should know the persona of your business and think of you as an expert.
 
These words, or content, should provide tons of information in small, bite-sized chunks of text.  No one likes to read 8 pages of content on a website.   On the flip side, no one likes to buy a product without knowing more about it.  You need to find the perfect balance between no information and providing too much.
 
Generally speaking, 400-800 words can do the trick.  It can provide content, position you as the expert and gently pre-sell your visitor on a product or service.
 
In addition to how much content you provide you should focus on providing specific answers to your customer’s problems or concerns.  Most visitors are on your website because they want answers.  They are not surfing your site to buy something.  They want answers.  So give them answers!
 
It’s how you provide your answers that matters.  There is a difference between selling and pre-selling, and how you provide the answers or information your visitor wants is that difference.
 
Selling is cold, distant and forceful.  Pre-selling is the opposite.  Pre-selling can be thought of as a recommendation or side note to all the great content you provide.  You want your website voice to develop trust and rapport with your visitor.  During that time you are positioned as an expert.  Any soft recommendation that you make will be considered by your visitor.
 
Forceful selling causes people to put up their defenses.  It causes them to take a step back and wonder what your motives are.  Pre-selling does not affect people this way.  Pre-selling should lead those that are interested to your product without hesitation and those that are not interested should be led to more general content on your website- that will again attempt to gently pre-sell them.
 
Pre-selling and content (part 1 of this series) are closely related.  You must provide information to your site visitors.  You must be viewed as the expert and as a helpful friend making a recommendation.  People will not feel sold by that.  People will respect that you are providing answers to their problems and making a recommendation for a product that can provide even more helpful info.  It’s seen as a favor instead of a hard sell.

Web Success Secret #2) Without Traffic- What’s the Point?

Part 1 of this series really got down and dirty about content.  The main focus of the Content is to make your visitors happy and make search engines happy.  This article is all about making you happy!  Think of this as your starter guide to increasing traffic and building a profitable business.
 
Traffic can be summed up in 2 words- free and paid.  I consider all PPC (pay-per-click), ezine advertising, offline advertising, and paid directory submissions a form of paying for your traffic.  I also consider any project that takes up your time to be paid advertising.  After all in the business world time is money.  Paid advertising is not bad.  It just means that you are paying to receive traffic.
 
Free traffic is harder to attract, but it costs you absolutely no money.  Almost all free traffic is the result of surfers finding your site on the search engines.  We talked about using content as your ultimate search engine ranking booster in the last article.
 
Here are several ways to increase traffic.  Some are paid advertising options and others are totally free.
 
– Write articles and submit them to several niche websites. Manually submitting articles to many websites can take a long time.  I use a submission service to do all my hard work.  Contact me for more info.
 
– Post in forums. Many forums will not allow you to market your product or services.  That’s totally understandable. What I recommend doing is finding a really great forum that you can participant in.  When people have questions, provide top notch and comprehensive answers.  No selling.  Almost all forums allow you to post your website in your sig file.  Take advantage of that.
 
– Submit each page of your website to all major search engines.  Also submit each page to all major search engines whenever you make a change on that page.  Be careful with this one.  Each engine has very specific directions and rules about submission rules.  Be sure you do not spam!  Submit pages according to each engine’s guidelines.  I also use a submission service that does this for me at no additional cost.
 
– Create joint ventures with non-competing websites.  Work with a company that compliments your product or service.  Also be sure the joint venture is a win-win-win for you, the other company and your customers.  Joint ventures can be a pain to set up and complete, but well worth it if done correctly.
 
– Look into ezine advertising, web advertising and/or PPC.  Each method takes an initial investment and some time to learn, but can bring back traffic.  Personally I do not prefer this method to increase traffic because it’s “iffy” at best.
 
– Print your website name on all business correspondences.  This is a simple task, but one that is simple to do.  Add it to your email sig line, forum sig lines, letterhead and business cards.
 
– Create an atmosphere of amazing customer service.  This always leads to referrals from current clients.  The more referrals the more traffic!
 
The bottom line is without traffic your site is floating in a sea of doom.  No one is seeing your content or services.  Traffic is the lifeline of any business, and the rule of thumb is more traffic means more income.
 
This brings me to my last and final point about traffic.  Once you develop a nice flow of visitors you need to know specifics.  Where did those visitors come from?  How did they find you?  What pages are the most popular on your site?  What page did they enter into your site?  What page did they leave your site?  What keywords did they use to find you?  You must know your visitor inside and out!
 
As I mentioned earlier, it is best to work smarter and not harder.  Traffic analysis and search engine submissions can be very time consuming, but your hosting company should be providing most of these services to you free of charge. Content is king only if you have exact and highly specific keywords placed in correct locations.  Unfortunately the hard part is determining what keywords to use.  A keyword can be a single word or a phrase.  It is the term that web surfers use to search for information.  Place yourself in their shoes and try to discover what search terms they use.  You must then evaluate the search term.  How many people search using that term?  How many sites already deliver information on that search term?  Simple demand and supply rules.  The more demand with the less supply equals more profitability.

Without a proper keyword search and analysis you may as well forget about becoming successful with an Internet business.  Investing in this one secret is literally the start of planning your website.
 
Your next action step is to plan your site layout based on the 50-175 high-demand and low-supply keywords. Your site should be structured in three tiers.  Tier one is your home page.  Tier two is made of all of your main topics and also constitutes your navigation bar buttons.  Tier three keywords are sub-topics of tier two pages.  Organize your 50-175 keywords into three tiers.  Doing this makes it easier for visitors to navigate through your site and it makes it easier for search engine spiders to find all of your pages.
 
Search engine spiders do not like to fish around for all of your pages and links.  This is why many sites offer a “site map”.  A site map is one page that contains links to all of the content pages.  This is a fine route to take; however most people agree that pages with a lot of links on it are valued less than content pages that casually link to other content pages.
 
Using three tiers allows you to go from topic to sub-topic to sub-sub-topic all by natural in-content links.  For example, tier 1 is the homepage on a fitness site.  Tier 2 is a page all about cardio activity and its benefits.  A tier three page off of that tier 2 page is about different treadmill routines.  Do you see how the site visitor would like this structure?  They click on “Cardio” and are given links to more specific pages about cardio topics.  Search engine spiders like the three tier structure too.  It means they do not have to dig through layers and levels of useless links.
 
There is even more to content than finding profitable keywords and structuring your site into easy-to-navigate tiers.  You must optimize each and every page on your website to perform well and rank high at search engines.  Many people devote their working life to optimization secrets.  A full length article just on optimizing is possible.  Heck, a full length book is possible.  My recommendation is to use a hosting company that automatically teaches you how to optimize web pages for the engines.  Doing that will cause less headache and frustration and it will keep you focused on building content.
 
A quick education in optimization: place your specific keyword in the file name, title, description and keyword section of your page.  Then sprinkle the keyword throughout the content.  Also provide a link using your specific keyword in the link text.  If all of this has you spinning your head, I recommend going the hosting company I use.  They literally teach you to build a website using blocks.  It’s all simple and easier than you think.
 
There is one last piece to content.  It must effectively pre-sell your product or service and position you as the expert in your field.  When your website has 50-175 optimized pages for your visitors to read through it will start to position you as the expert.  Your site will become known as the place for information about (insert your niche).
 
When visitors find your site through search engines they are seeking information about a problem or question they have.  If they land on your site and you try to sell them something right away one thing is sure- they click the back button and find another site that will give them information.  This is why pre-selling your product or service is paramount.  Give your visitors what they want.  Answer their question and in the process let them know about your services and products.
 
All of the information develops rapport and trust with your site visitor.  It positions you as an expert.  It keeps your visitor on your site longer since they are actually reading content.  Search engines notice this and rank you better.  How well your site can keep visitors is known as "stickiness."  Your site must attract and keep visitors for as long as possible.
 
Provide content that pre-sells your products, positions you as the expert and focuses on highly profitable keywords.  You cannot go wrong with your web business if you do those things.  The secret to content is to satisfy both your visitor and search engines.  Lose one or both and you are doomed.  As I mentioned earlier, it is best to work smarter and not harder.  Your hosting company should be providing most of these services to you free of charge.  There are a small few that do this, but it is well worth the investigation. Bad Words – Do you know exactly why people don’t seem excited to buy your product? Have you ever wonder why your competitors make more sales even though they have a terrible product to offer? Even worse, why people couldn’t even be bothered to live their email address in your opt-in form and subscribe to your free newsletter?
 
You may wonder people just don’t feel interested to buy your product or maybe your price is too high. Or you’ve finally realized that your product is a pile of junk and decided to find another product to sell.
 
You’ve got to stop whatever you’re doing and think for a moment. It is not your product to be blame. Sometimes your own salesletter which is the one that kill your business. You’ve written some words that people don’t even want to hear and scare the hell out of them. Studied has shown using these words will decrease your sales up to 75%. 

So, what are exactly the bad words you should never say in your newsletter?

1) Buy – This specifically asking people to take out their wallet and spend some money. Bare in mind, most people surf the Internet searching certain information for free and sometimes they need more time before considering buying your product. Whatever business you’re doing, using this word alone can destroy your business in split second. Instead of using the word ‘buy’, change it to ‘claim’ or ‘invest’. Ask yourself, which one sound better, “Buy this amazing product” or “Claim this amazing product.”
 
2) Learn – This will remind people back in the old days where they have to study and learn in 1st or 2nd Grade. Nobody wants to squeeze their brain out and learn something new on the Internet. Information on the Internet is just too huge. Nowadays, people want fast information and have no time to learn. Instead of using the word ‘learn’, it is better to use the word ‘discover’. Now we are giving somewhere. Does this word sounds a lot better, “Discover 10 Easy Tips To Improve Your Golf Swing.”
 
3) Tell – You don’t have to use this word to explain the benefit of your product. People will not listen to you if they don’t recognize you. Study this two words carefully, “Let me tell you the secrets of becoming a millionaire” or “Let me reveal to you the secrets of becoming a millionaire.” Which one do you think that will make people keep on reading your newsletter?
 
4) Things – Using this word will not make your salesletter sound astonishing. It makes the salesletter very boring to read. This will make people lost their confidence in whatever you’ve offered to them. Instead of using the word ‘things’, consider to revise it to ‘tips’, ‘tricks’ or ‘techniques’. “Get these 5 great techniques right away” is far better than “Get these 5 great things right away.”
 
5) Stuff – This word is what most marketers used to describe how great the product is. If you change it to ‘Insider Secrets’, definitely this will give people an urge to act right away. Consider this two words, “Click here to download your 7 stuffs” or “Click here to download your 7 amazing insider secrets.” Which one would you like to click?
 
If you can avoid this 5 bad words, your sales will definitely boost up to the roof. Don’t neglect the power of these words. Now, it’s time for you to check all your salesletter and change it (if any) right away. You will be surprise of the outcome.
